Is anyone on line a heallth care worker who volunteered in New Orleans?

I was wondering if upon return to your job, did you experience any “coolness” from your co-workers? I know several people, (including myself) who got a real cold shoulder from their co-workers when they returned! Totally baffling to us. This DID pass over time. Did you experience this?
Also, did anyone journal their experiences? Has anyone read any books written by a volunteer who worked in New Orleans after Katrina?
Has anyone been down there in the past month or so? Are the shelters any better now? When i was there, there was no electricity, no running water, (thanks to Rita going over while we were there!) and somedays no food. How is it now?

Because green tea has an inhibiting effect on insulin, it therefore helps keep sugar from being stored as fats and instead, send them directly into the muscles for immediate use.

The Downside

Although the diet has a reputation for boosting health, scientific proofs of its health benefits are still somewhat mixed. However, in an article published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, American researchers collaborated with their Chinese counterparts to discuss the beneficial effects of green tea diet on cholesterol levels.

Using 240 men and women (average age 55) who possess mild to moderately high LDL cholesterol levels, the researchers instructed them to retain their usual low-fat diet, green tea diet intake, and activity levels. After twelve weeks, it was found that those who consumed the green tea diet extract with their regular meals lost more than fifteen percent of their total LDL cholesterol levels.

Although the researchers never explained how the green tea diet may influence cholesterol levels, previous studies have shown that certain compounds play a role in reducing the amount of cholesterol absorbed by the body, increasing amount of cholesterol excreted, and thus keeping cholesterol from being stored in the liver.

Subsequent studies were made to test the findings of the first group of researchers. Their results were contradictory. They found there was no significant effect on the cholesterol profiles of their subjects.

There is no such thing as a miracle diet. The green tea diet like all other diets needs a lot of work and input from those who enroll in it. It requires both discipline and determination for it to make any significant impact on your weight loss goals.

Eating for Good Health: Diets From Around the World

Diet is an important component of staying healthy and aging well. As an acupuncturist, I have studied food and dietary therapy from the standpoint of Chinese medicine. The Chinese view food as medicine that we eat three (and sometimes more!) times a day. Beyond good digestion and eating certain foods for specific conditions, a number of my patients have asked us what makes up a “good” diet.

My first answer is always to eat for your specific body type or health condition. For example, if you have digestive problems, it is important to eat cooked, easily digestable foods such a soups, stews, and stir fried dishes. If you tend to feel hot much of the time, eating foods that are energetically cooling, such as bananas, melons, cucumbers, tomatoes, and mint are appropriate. If you are chronically cold, warming foods, such as lamb, ginger, and cinnemon can be helpful. Eating for your particular condition is best done with the consultation of a practitioner of acupuncture or Chinese medicine.

 A general guideline for eating according to Chinese medicine, is to incorporate the following into your diet:

 -Lots of dark-colored cooked vegetables

-Whole grains

-A little fruit

-Small amounts of protein

-A wide variety of local foods

-Avoid ice cold foods and drinks, concentrated juices, saturated fats, sugar, and sweeteners

Eating according to the principles of Chinese food therapy is just one way to better health, however. There are a number of theories as to what makes up the optimal diet.

Some current research on diet points to the Mediterranean Diet as another optimal way to eat to maintain good health. The Mediterranean Diet incorporates foods from the countries around the Mediterranean, and its benefits include increased cardiovascular health, weight maintenance, a decreased risk of some cancers, reduced inflammation and decreased cognitive decline. The good news is that very modest lifestyle changes, like incorporating only one or two components of the diet, or starting changes later in life can still produce significant health benefits.

So what is the Mediterranean Diet? While there are a number of versions, the key components include:

 -Olives and olive oil products along with lots of fruits and vegetables

-Red wine (up to three glasses a day!)

-Deep sea fish

-Whole grains

-Legumes (beans), nuts, and seeds

-Fermented low fat dairy products (yogurt, kefir, etc.)

-Limited red meat, sweets, and full fat dairy products

While it’s always better to incorporate changes early in life, the take away message here is diet does matter, and regardless of when you start, small changes can impact your health.
